Save money at the butcher

The cost of meat in recent months has left me considering vegetarianism. Fortunately I have found a fantastic way to reduce the cost of my butcher's bill: buy a whole carcass and trim it myself.

This idea can cause problems if you're on a tight week to week budget. It also requires freezer space and a decent set of knives. Fortunately, these downsides are backed up by a lot of information online about trimming your own meat and saving money at the butcher.

So, where do you buy a whole animal? Or even a quarter or half? If you live in a rural area, you're bound to hear about these places by word of mouth... Of course you probably wouldn't be reading this right now if that were the case.

My favourite seller is the Min Y Morfa farm shop in Wales. You can order online and with a small delivery charge they will deliver across the UK.

Once your order arrives you'll need to know what to do with it... I've written a couple of articles to get you started:

How to trim your own beef tenderloin
Recognise your cuts of beef

Good luck!

Very fascinating. I am planning to do this soon to fill my fridge up and save on the costs of buying meat at the supermarket. There are lots of farmers here where I live (Alabama) and I should be able to get a great deal. My brother is an excellent butcher (he raises goats) and I am sure he will help me out. Fantastic idea for cost cutting.
